What we fact-check
We fact-check all factual claims that are central to a story. This includes:
- Direct quotations attributed to named individuals.
- Numerical claims, statistics, and financial figures.
- Dates, locations, and event details.
- Historical claims and background context.
- Causal claims about why something happened.
How we fact-check
Reporters and editors verify each significant claim against a primary source wherever possible: the original document, the original dataset, the original recording, the named human source, or the original publication. When we rely on secondary reporting, we link to the source so readers can verify the claim themselves.
What we will not publish
If a fact cannot be verified to our satisfaction, we either do not publish the claim, attribute it carefully to a source, or we hold the story until verification is possible. We do not paraphrase speculation as fact, and we do not present anonymous online claims as established fact without independent confirmation.
Sources and methods
We list the sources for major claims so readers can see the basis for our reporting. We are willing to explain our methods and to publish clarifications when our reporting is challenged and a challenge is well-founded.
