Dollar dips but weekly gain remains

The newer Reuters report said the dollar declined on September 25 as oil prices eased, but remained on track for a second straight weekly advance as rate-hike expectations grew. Reuters said the dollar index fell 0.3% to 100.95 in that report.

The same report said oil prices fell more than 2% while remaining above $100 a barrel, preserving pressure on inflation. It linked the broader dollar strength to central-bank comments, higher Treasury yields and expectations for more rate increases after the previous week’s hike.

Current Yahoo Finance quote

Yahoo Finance’s quote page, accessed at 07:45 UTC on September 26, showed a delayed September 25 close of 101.04, up 0.06%. The page listed a previous close of 100.97, an open of 101.27 and a session range of 100.87 to 101.31.

  • Previous close: 100.97
  • September 25 range: 100.87 to 101.31
  • Reuters October hike odds: About 66%, up from about 58% a week earlier

Rate outlook

Reuters said October Fed hike expectations stood at about 66%, compared with about 58% a week earlier, citing CME FedWatch. The report quoted Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack expressing concern that persistent inflation could weaken confidence in a return to the 2% target.

In the same September 25 report, Reuters said the euro was up 0.15% at $1.1396, sterling was up 0.23% at $1.3246 and the yen was up 1.06% at 157.13. Those were Reuters’ market levels in that report, not the current delayed Yahoo quote.

The newer report did not repeat the earlier claims about two-year yields reaching a May 2024 high or a 0.56% prior-day DXY rise, so those figures are not carried forward.

Cross-market effect

A firm dollar can tighten financial conditions and raise the hurdle for assets priced in dollars, including crypto. The current quote shows an elevated index even after the newer Reuters-described pullback, leaving rates and oil as the main cross-market signals.

Reuters said the dollar index was on track for its biggest daily percentage drop in about three weeks, while still set for a weekly gain. That combination describes a pullback inside a broader rate-driven dollar advance.
